Book review A simpler way - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Book review A simpler way - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This book by Margaret Wheatley is without a doubt the most beautiful and unconventional business-related book Ive ever read. It conveys its message not only through prose, but also in poems and photographs. And the message itself is simple and beautiful, namely that: There is a simpler way to organize human endeavour. It requires a new way of being in the world. It requires being in the world without fear. Being in the world with play and creativity. Seeking after whats possible. Being willing to learn and to be surprised. So what is this simpler way? The book will tell you what its not: Its not the world view fostered in Darwinism, that the world is a cruel place, in which only the strongest can thrive. This world view has been prevalent since Darwin. And its not mechanistic and reductionist either. According to this book, systems are irreducible. You cannot understand or predict a system by looking at its components. The properties of the system are emergent, and only manifest themselves in the system. They are not present in the seperate components. So they argue that the common western metaphor for life today, ie. life as a struggle, is not in tune with the way the world (and life) organizes itself. Life organizes and evolves itself through relations and cooperation. Therefore, a much more accurate metaphore for life would be life as play. Seeing life as a game could have many implications for the way we live and organize our endeavours, but the principal promise of such a world view, is that it can make life easier and more fun. The traditional view is that life is hard. Only those who work hard and struggle are succesful. You must make sacrifices to reach your goals. Especially work life is no picnic. This view is very common, and after having read this book, Im convinced that its totally false or rather, its true, but only because we make it true by believing that its true. The whole book is eminently quotable. Almost every paragraph holds succinct, interesting nuggets of information, presented in a simple but thought-provoking way. Heres an example: We live in a world where attraction is ubiquitous. Organization wants to happen. People want their lives to mean something. We seek one another to develop new capacities. With all these wonderful and innate desires calling us to organize, we can stop worrying about designing perfect structure or rules. We need to become intrigued by how we create a clear and coherent identity, a self that we can organize around. The whole book is like that, and I cant recommend it highly enough. Read it! If I may suggest an equally untraditional companion, you should see Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio. This is a movie with no plot, no actors and no dialogue. Its simply and hour and a half of nature contrasted with mans impact on nature. It illustrates beautifully the contrast between life as struggle and life as play. And no. its not boring at all, its breath-taking. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. Announcing Grown-Up Gigs the live video interview show! Oh you guys, Im so excited about this and I feel like its been a long time in developmentyknow those ideas you have that are just little seeds in the back of your mind but lead you to keep it in your head because if you could just get a clearer picture of it you know itd be something so exciting and perfect and do-able? Thats what Grown-Up Gigs: The Live Video Interview Show is to me! If youve been around these parts for a while, you mightve been privy to the first incarnation of Grown-Up Gigs, which lived as a series here from Nov 2009-Dec 2011. I so wanted to bring to the forefront the people who were working in creative professionsfollowing their dreams and making it happen in their passionate career, but as grown-ups, yaknowwhatImean? I interviewed interior designers and best-selling authors and artists and party planners and rappers and highlighted pizza firetrucks and lego artists andI loved it, but it always got a bit of a lackluster response with views and comments and whatnot. So I posted my last Grown-Up Gigs interview in Dec 2011or so I thought. In 2013, Ill be going back to my roots as The When I Grow Up Coach (yes, therell be a longer post about that next month), and what I mean by that is: I wonât rest until all creative types can see the possibility in making a grown-up living doing what they love. Im here to help creatives discover what it is they could do that theyd be passionate about, and a big part of that is knowing really knowing, really trusting that others have done it. Are doing it. As grown-ups. Without day jobs. Or trust funds. I wanna talk to those people. I wanna send that message. I wanna know how they discovered their passionate career, and how theyre making it work as grown-ups. There will be talk about money. There will be talk about experience. There will be talk about paths (not) taken and lessons learned and there will be time for live QA, too. Business Resume Examples - Different Types of Resume Examples
Business Resume Examples - Different Types of Resume ExamplesThere are many different types of business resume examples you can use. Here are some of the more common ones. Please note that this article is not about how to create a great business resume, but more about how to find one.Customer Service: While this is a very popular example, there are many different types of examples. One way to keep this type of resume example simple is to include a specific example of your specific skill or your work history. For example, if you are a customer service specialist, make sure that the skills that you are using to help your customers are related to your experience in this position. By keeping it focused, it can be easily found and, hopefully, kept as a reference for employers when they are looking for someone with your particular skills.Time Management: It may seem a little redundant to include this example in your resume, but many businesses can benefit from this type of resume example. This example usually features a step-by-step outline for how a business can measure success. How well are you spending time with your family, how can you improve the productivity of your business, etc. These are all questions that should be asked and answered in your business before you make your decision to hire someone to manage your organization. For this reason, it is important to write your time management skills and determine if they would work for you.Great Ideas: Some people may be afraid to include this on their resume. However, great ideas are the most important part of an employee's resume. The only problem is that many times, these ideas end up on the back of your business resume. In many cases, this is a sign that you do not really know what you are talking about.Great Example: This is a great example for a personal statement example. If you have many ideas and skills, or if you are just curious about your potential new boss, you can include this in your resume. Your pe rsonal statement is an opportunity to detail your capabilities and experience, which is why it is so important to include this in your resume.Other: These are all common examples. Some are more common than others, and some are less common. These examples can be very helpful to you if you need to list a few qualities that fit your resume, but want to keep it short. Be sure to keep it brief, but long enough to give some useful examples of your skills and experience.Just remember that there are many types of examples and so, depending on the type of example you choose, you can create a unique resume. Keep it simple, but make sure that it shows how you can help your prospective employer.

15 Companies Where Half the Employees Make $100,000 or More
15 Companies Where Half the Employees Make $100,000 or More Considering a career move and worrying about your wallet? Fret no more. Thanks to a new federal rule, you can now know for sure how much money the median worker makes at a certain company. As part of the recession-inspired Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, public companies now have to tell the Securities and Exchange Commission about the pay ratio between their median employee and chief executive officer. (In case you forgot this lesson from elementary school, a quick review: A median is a type of average derived from a groupâs midpoint. So in this case, it refers to someone who makes more than 50 percent of their coworkers and less than 50 percent of their coworkers.) Companies that wrapped up their fiscal years in December needed to submit their annual compensation info by Monday. Looking at the data, some results were obvious â" like the fact that Facebookâs median pay is one of the highest â" but others were surprising â" like that the median pay at Molson Coors Brewing Co. is nearly $73,000. Thatâs a lot for making beer. Still curious? Here are 15 companies where half the employees make at least six figures, according to their respective SEC filings: LogMeIn Inc. David Cultonâ"courtesy of LogMeIn If youâve ever had to patiently log on remotely to fix your parentsâ computer from hundreds of miles away, youâve probably used LogMeIn. The median employee at the software provider makes $108,209, and reviewers on its Indeed page excitedly report that its offices have a roof deck and ping-pong table. Dunkinâ Brands Group Inc. Signage is displayed on a register as an employee helps customers at a Dunkin' Donuts Inc. location in Ramsey, New Jersey, U.S., on Thursday, May 5, 2016. Ron Antonelliâ"Bloomberg via Getty Images Even though the median employee makes $110,471, youâre probably not going to pocket that much by slinging Munchkins in the local strip mall. In fact, according to the Boston Business Journal, the median here only factors in the Massachusetts-based chainâs corporate workers who set menus and oversee marketing â" not the employees at franchise locations. Thatâs a lot less Coolatta. The Boeing Co. Alex JW Robinsonâ"Shutterstock When itâs no longer time to make the doughnuts, check out Boeing, which brags on LinkedIn that itâs âthe worldâs largest aerospace companyâ with over 140,000 employees. Median worker pay is $111,204, and it just gave out $600 million in bonuses in Washington â" the largest in company history. Sirius XM Holdings Inc. Keith Urban performs live on SiriusXM's The Highway Channel at SiriusXM's Music City Theatre on April 23, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. Jason Kempinâ"Getty Images for SiriusXM Forbes calls this satellite radio giant one of the worldâs most innovative properties, and some 32 million subscribers would likely agree. The median employee at Sirius XM makes $114,841, which is enough to buy more than 10,000 online Mostly Music subscriptions. Howard Stern would be proud. EBay Inc. David Paul Morrisâ"Bloomberg via Getty Images The median compensation for employees at this online marketplace comes in at $122,891. Of course, thatâs not counting the people who have made selling items on eBay a career â" like Linda Lightman, a Pennsylvania mom who earned an insane $25 million from the site in 2015. Verizon Communications Inc. A cyclist rides past a Verizon Wireless store in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. David Paul Morrisâ"Bloomberg via Getty Images Verizon may have lost its âCan you hear me now?â guy Paul Marcarelli, but it still has about 155,000 employees. Its median employee pay is $126,623, meaning itâs crushing rival ATT â" a status due in part to differences in the locations of their headquarters, their business priorities, store operations and numbers of contractors, the Wall Street Journal reported recently. NewMarket Corp. EY7RH9 A logo sign outside of the headquarters of the NewMarket Corporation in Richmond, Virginia on July 19, 2015. Alamy Stock Photoâ"Alamy Stock Photo Now weâre getting somewhere. At NewMarket, which oversees Afton Chemical and Ethyl Corporation, the median employee makes $128,030. Fun fact: The firm was founded in 1887 as a paper blotting company but now manufactures oil and fuel products to help car engines operate better, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Zynga Inc. Pedestrians walk in front of the Zynga Inc. headquarters in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014. David Paul Morrisâ"Bloomberg via Getty Images Remember FarmVille? The staff at social media game developer Zynga sure does. Itâs moved on to other ventures recently â" did you know thereâs a FarmVille 2? â" but the median employee is no poor ranch hand. The average worker makes an impressive $140,382. Phillips 66 A Phillips 66 logo is seen on a gas pump as a car is filled a Beck's station in Princeton, Illinois, U.S., on Monday, March 5, 2012. Daniel Ackerâ"Bloomberg via Getty Images This isnât just a sign you see while youâre sprinting from your car to the gas station bathroom â" itâs an energy company where the average employee earns $170,988. CNBC reported billionaire Warren Buffett is a fan of the company, as well: He owns just under 10 percent of it. But how does he feel about 7-Eleven hotdogs? DTE Energy Co. DTE Energy Headquarters, Detroit, Michigan Mark Houstonâ"DTE Energy Forget DTF â" DTE should stand for âDown to Earn.â DTE Energy is a 23-year-old energy company that pays its average worker $173,839. Itâs also literally breaking new ground â" it just got the OK to build a new gas plant in Michigan, according to Crainâs. Pandora Media Inc. Aurore Ounjian, James Alex, Dan Crotts, and Tierney Tough of Beach Slang perform onstage at Pandora during SXSW at Stubb's Bar-B-Q on March 15, 2018 in Austin, Texas. Travis P Ballâ"Getty Images for SXSW Step aside, Spotify. Music streaming service Pandora is still around, and it pays its median employee about $175,138. Plus, according to SF Gate, the headquarters has a foosball table in the cafeteria. Give that a thumbs up. Netflix Inc. Sign of Netflix at headquarters in Los Gatos, CA. Shutterstock Are you still reading? This streaming service behind genius series Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black pays its median employee $183,304. The company also offers perks like a full year of paid leave for new parents and stock options, according to Recode. Talk about Netflix and chill. Alphabet Inc. Tourist visit the headquarter of Google in Mountain View, California. Yichuan Cao/NurPhotoâ"Getty Images You donât need to search to know that Googleâs parent company pays pretty well â" its median employee makes $197,274. But getting hired is another story. Only a small fraction of the 2 million people who apply every year actually receive job offers. Statistically, itâs roughly 10 times harder to land a Google gig than it is to be admitted into Harvard University, so good luck. Splunk Inc. A computer screen showing a webpage for Splunk Inc. is displayed for a photograph in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Thursday, April. 19, 2012. David Paul Morrisâ"Bloomberg via Getty Images You may have never heard of Splunk, but if youâre job-hunting you might want to â" it pays its median employee $256,370. Not to mention the fact that the machine data platform has about 3,000 workers worldwide serving more than 15,000 customers. Not bad for a company that sounds like something youâd find in the shower drain. TESARO Inc. TESARO Inc. Executives and Associates stand by a giant light switch after the lights on top of the Prudential Tower were changed into a teal color in honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, in Boston, September 5, 2017. AP/REX/Shutterstock The average employee at this Massachusetts-based drug company makes an impressive $344,329 â" more than double what the median worker earns at Phillips 66. At TESARO, though, workers arenât just making good money â" theyâre also doing good for their target audience of cancer patients.

Market Your Brand Top 10 LinkedIn Add-Ons - Work It Daily
Market Your Brand Top 10 LinkedIn Add-Ons - Work It Daily Would you like to enhance the quality of your LinkedIn profile in a way that encourages recruiters and hiring managers to read yours more thoroughly? If so, consider supplementing your profile with one or more strategic LinkedIn add-ons. Top 10 LinkedIn Add-Ons For Your Brand Many job seekers are unaware that they can attach documents and media to a LinkedIn profile. Yet doing so turns your profile into a makeshift online portfolio and gives you greater flexibility in promoting your career brand to recruiters, hiring managers, and influential contacts. What do I mean by profile add-ons? Through the one-click installation of a few applications, or software snippits, to your profile, you can âattachâ documents, spreadsheets, videos, audios, and slideshows to your LinkedIn URL. To tempt you with some rich possibilities, here are my current Top 10 favorite LinkedIn add-ons: 1. A Personal Marketing Brief A marketing brief is a one-page document that succinctly and strategically showcases your career brand, job search goals, work history, and achievement track record. Recruiters love them and often use this documentâs content to create their own briefs on your background when they choose to share your candidacy with their client companies. 2. Your Executive Bio Bios are more formal documents than marketing briefs, and are also more narrative in style. For executives, this is a must-have tool that serves many different networking purposes. Attach one to your profile to help recruiters and hiring managers get to know your background before they see your resume. 3. Your Resume If youâre presently employed, this option isnât a great idea. But if youâre a free agent, then consider attaching your resume to your profile. You wonât be able to tailor it toward specific opportunities, of course, but if you attach more than one version, you can help recruiters in different industries understand why youâre a candidate they cannot ignore. 4. A Leadership Brief Appropriate for experienced leaders, this brief outlines detail-rich examples of your leadership experience. This is a one or two-page document that contains less branding and fewer work experience details. Instead, this brief dives deep into your leadership CAR (Challenge-Action-Results) stories. 5. A Case Study (Or 2 Or 3) Similar to a leadership brief, this document provides in-depth detail on your best CAR stories. Unlike the leadership brief, a single case study may take up a whole page. Or, you may have two to three shorter case studies on a single page. Case studies can cover a wide array of achievements, but must be positive with impactful results. 6. Video Interview Filming a short video of yourself can be a great add-on if you wish to showcase your energy and personality. Keep it short â" less than five minutes â" and practice, practice, practice to make it perfect. Share your well-thought-out reply to the infamous âtell me about yourselfâ question, or present a brief overview of your candidacy. 7. A Slideshow Using a fun tool such as SlideRocket, enrich a PowerPoint presentation with animation or interactivity. Whether you detail your greatest strengths, achievements, or the Top 10 reasons why the reader should hire you, youâll be engaging them in a dialogue about your candidacy. 8. Your Audio Personal Commercial Perhaps video doesnât work for you or your situation. Or maybe youâre concerned about potential discrimination? Audio might be a good option for you. You can use an audio add-on in much the same ways as you would a video or slideshow â" just make sure you keep it short and well-paced. 9. Your Achievement Brief As with the Leadership Brief and a Case Study, an Achievement Brief is an in-depth look at a part of your background. This one to two-page document delves into some of your strongest achievements spanning multiple roles. This document is great in situations where you wish to be considered for different types or levels of positions or multiple industries. 10. Your Networking Resume While a traditional resume is usually two pages these days, there is a place for what some industry professionals call a networking or power resume â" a one-page version of your resume that ruthlessly hones in on key details. It usually retains all the same sections of your resume, but with much less (though always strategic) information. To explore the applications available to add to LinkedIn, login to your profile and select âMoreâ from the navigation bar at the top. Click on âGet Applicationsâ to check out options such as Box.net, Creative Portfolio Display, and Slideshare. To install an app, click on its image or link, then click on âAdd Applicationâ in the lower right-hand corner. Most apps require minimal set-up before you can upload files. Note that you must select âdisplay on my profileâ for your uploaded files to be publicly attached. The critical thing to note here is that Iâm not suggesting that you add content to your profile for the sake of adding content. Rather, Iâm suggesting you develop strategically branded career communications tools to highlight your unique strengths, experience, and achievements to recruiters and hiring managers. Have fun turning your LinkedIn profile into an information powerhouse on your candidacy! Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

10 Secrets of Superstar Interns
10 Secrets of Superstar Interns 10 Secrets of Superstar InternsReady to nail your summer internship? Keep these tips in mind. TWEETSummer internships are here If you have scored one of the coveted slots, you are probably excited and nervous at the same time. The interviews may have addressed what it will be like, but you never really know until you are there. If you have already started, you may be feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the protocol still. If this is you, I encourage you to take a deep breath. Whether you are loving your internship or are off to a tenuous start, read on for summer internship advice on how to get the most out of the experience.1. Know what you want to get out of it.Clarity on what you are hoping to get out of this experience will go a long way towards focusing your mental game and your efforts during the summer. Perhaps you want a glimpse of what it is like to work in the area you are studying. Maybe you hope to network and meet professionals who can help you connect to your dream job, or make some money. Be honest with yourself about why you are there.2. Mingle and networkWhether you are the life of a feier or prefer quiet observation from the sidelines, being in a professional environment is a fantastic opportunity to network. Dont just stick with other interns I know they are fun and easy to relate to, but venture out into the halls and meet other people. Ask them for internship advice, offer to buy them a coffee in exchange for a 20 minute chat, and learn as much as you can.3. Dress appropriately. This should go without saying, but dress professionally for the environment you are in. Even if you are stuck in the office all day making photocopies, look as if you are planning to shadow a partner into a client meeting (it just might happen). The best suggestion I ever heard on dressing appropriately was from a wonderful HR professional who was running my intern orientation at ernsthaftigkeit Young. Her advice? If you look at y ourself in the mirror and are elend quite sure whether something is appropriate, change.4. Do your assigned tasks cheerfully and efficiently.Yes, even the tedious ones. You may be asked to get coffee, make copies, deliver reports, or organize the file room. Hopefully those arent the only assignments you will get during the summer internship, but when a boring one lands on your desk, pick it up cheerfully and get to it.The reality of the professional office is, everyone does some admin. You might be feeling a little overqualified for making photocopies, but you know who else is overqualified for that task? Everyone around you. Your professionalism and efficiency in handling simple administrative tasks will pave the way for mora interesting projects.5. If you are underutilized, ask for more work.Boring work may not be your first choice, but it beats sitting around doing nothing for a long time. The first few hours may be fun, but you will probably feel like you have reached the end of the Internet by the second day. I have a vivid memory of sitting around with nine other interns waiting for assignments for several long days. When one of us finally scored a task of stuffing letters into envelopes, we nearly had a fight over who would get to do it, and ended up splitting the task 10 ways just to have something productive to do.Learn from my experience and get proactive about asking for work at your summer internship. Sometimes, managers are reluctant to assign you a project because of the learning curve that is involved. Demonstrate that you can pick up concepts quickly, and offer to work with your managers preference regarding interruptions for questions. Ask about any long-term ongoing projects that would keep you busy for a while.6. Observe and absorb as much as you can.Whether you are actively doing something or just shadowing your manager, pay attention to how things are done. You will notice that some of the practices and methods are not what they teach you at school. File away the differences, and practice open-mindedness.7. Do your best work every time.No one expects you to do something perfectly the first time you attempt it. That being said, honest diligent effort and willingness to learn from mistakes go a long way. You are being trusted with real projects what you do will affect many people. Do your best work.8. If you are unsure, ask.During your summer internship, you will probably find yourself unsure about how to do something roughly 90% of the time. One of my managers used to joke that there is nothing like a professional internship to make you forget how to write your name Anticipate that, and get clarity on your managers preference regarding question timing. Some prefer that you ask as the question occurs to you, others would rather not be interrupted multiple times and will ask you to compile your questions. Remember that your manager is busy, but he does not want you to spin your wheels. This is your opportunity to pract ice balance and good judgment.9. Ask for feedback. You wont get better unless the professionals around you generously offer feedback and suggestions for improvement. Accept feedback graciously, even if it is difficult to hear or poorly delivered. The only appropriate response when someone gives you feedback is, Thank you. If youre not receiving feedback, ask for it. Your manager will respect your desire to learn and improve.10. Act your age.Which is another way of saying, act professionally. Even if you are going back to school in September, you are in a professional environment for the summer, and a client visiting the office for contract negotiations has no way of knowing whether you are an intern or a full-time staff. That advice goes for all work functions, both inside and outside the office. Dont be that intern who drank so much that he passed out in front of the elevator during the off site meeting, wearing a hat and a t-shirt with the firm logo. That is a true story, and no, he did not get an offer. In closing, remember during the good days and the tough ones that this summer internship is an opportunity. Keep your eye on what matters most, and stay in the game. Be polite, be helpful, be the intern that others want to work with. If you love the company, but the internship does not automatically imply a full-time offer, ask about positions. If you learn that your dream job is not so dreamy after all, count that as a useful experience anyway.Need help with your resume? Take advantage of our free critique todayRelated Articles
